In remembrance of one of our heroes...

We were saddened to learn this week that one of our childhood cancer heroes, Matthew Schechter passed away. Matt was a lemonade stand host and most recently a volunteer at our annual gala, The Lemon Ball.

Matt was a true hero. We are reminded especially this week that the work of our supporters, volunteers, grantees, and everyone fighting for a cure for kids with cancer really does matter, in big and small ways, to these kids and their families. They are why we are here.

This week’s blog is dedicated to all the children who have faced and will face childhood cancer in their lifetime, and to our continuing promise of working toward the day when cures become reality.

>> Read Matt’s story, as posted to our website in 2009.

  1. What a wonderful tribute. As someone who knew Matt personally, I can tell you that he WAS a hero in every sense. A sweet, gentle soul with a quirky sense of humor...he was my son's best friend, my husband's great pal and my friends' super son and brother.

May his memory be a blessing.

  3. I'm from the UK but I've read Matt's story & was touched by it. My prayers are with his family & may he rest in peace.

My older brother had ALL as a teenager. It is 8 years on now and he is perfectly healthy, but I know all too well that some of us aren't so lucky.

So sorry to hear about the death of a truly brave boy.

  5. Matty was loving, kind and funny! He made a difference in this world in so many postive, meaningful ways. I guess that is all any of us can wish for. Much love to Cindy, Jay, Rachel and the extended family. Rest in peace, Matt!

  6. Matt was my best friend. Frankly, I don't think I would have made it through high school without him. I want to keep his legacy & the ALSF awareness going. It's not fair that both Matt, 20, and Max 17, passed away so young from their diseases. We need to keep urging these greedy insurance companies to just give research a chance. We have the tools & prototypes to do so. Until then, when life gives you lemons, make lemonade.

  7. Although it is sad to loose somebody like Matt, I'm sure he had touched a lot of lives with his story. My prayer goes to his family as well.

ALSF, I salute the work that you are doing. God bless you all!

  10. What a sad story...I really hope that Matthew enjoyed the last few months of his life - it sounds like he was a fighter right up until the very end...
